Outline of our Beginners Creative Writing Course
Week One – Ideas and Inspiration
Where do ideas come from?
Module One of the beginners creative writing course looks at how you, the writer, can take inspiration from a wide range of sources that are all around you, and turn them into exciting material for your stories.
Week Two – Bringing Your Characters to Life
In week two, you will learn how to build a character from nothing.
We will carry out a plethora of exercises that will spark your character-creating ideas and help them to become real people (or animals, or creatures!) After all, if you’re writing fiction, it is vital to create believable characters.
Week Three – Voice, Viewpoint and Dialogue
So, you’ve created a character. Now it’s time to think about your writer’s voice, point of view and dialogue.
Module three of the online writing course will explore what ‘voice’ actually is, the effect of your chosen point of view on the story you’re trying to tell, and how to incorporate strong dialogue
Week Four – World Building and Settings
Stories can be set in any place you see fit – be that a completely different world, or the supermarket down the road!
In week four, you’ll discover the importance of well thought out and descriptive settings. You’ll also learn how to create vivid imagery and how to place your characters within your story world.
Week Five – Pin Your Plot Down
During module five of the beginners course, you’ll look into the fundamental elements of story structure.
We’ll look at examples of other stories to help you learn how to plot your own beginning, middle and end. You will also discover how to write an intriguing beginning that will hook your reader from the start.
Week Six – Getting Stuck, and Getting On
Our final module will explore the further components of creative writing, some of which you may not have even thought about.
We’ll try exercises that help combat every writer’s worst enemy – writer’s block. You’ll also be given tips on how to redraft and edit your work, as well as advice on what to do next. You’ll be entering competitions, or even writing your own novel, in no time!
