Outline of our Creative Writing Course for Teenagers

Week One – Ideas and Introductions

In week one, we’ll start where all stories start: with a single idea.

You will discover how to find your creative spark and ignite it. We’ll keep the fire burning by learning various techniques and tools that will help you to keep generating ideas and build upon them.

Week Two – Characters

For module two, we will focus on character – the driving force behind any tale.

You will begin to understand how to craft compelling characters that draw a reader into your story and stay there. We will ask ourselves: ‘What makes a good character?’ ‘How are they built?’ ‘What do they want?’

Week Three – Settings

During week three of the teenagers course, we will delve into the wonderful (story)world of setting.

Not only does setting play a vital part in creating imagery and describing surroundings, it is also a subtle way to drive the plot and inform your reader of your characters. This module will help you to develop this technique and maximise the impact of your setting.

Week Four – Dialogue

What your characters say, and the way in which they say it, can divulge so much. In other words, dialogue can bring them to life.

Module four will therefore equip you with essential tools to interweave powerful speech into your story.

Week Five – Scenes

Week five of the writing course will focus on the combination of characters, dialogue, setting and ACTION. That is to say: a scene.

We will consider what it takes to craft a good scene and think about how we’ll let it unfold. You will also learn how to create unforgettable moments that will keep your reader hooked.

Week Six – Structure

For the final module, we will draw on everything we’ve learnt throughout the course to write a stunning story.

We will look at the five-point story structure to help you understand how you can build up your story from scratch.
