You’ve written a short story and want to get it into the world, so what’s next? Our online path to publication course will give you the actionable tools to take your work and get it seen by editors of literary journals/websites.

Though this course is not a guarantee for getting published, it offers up proven techniques to give you the best chance at getting seen. Your tutor will guide you through the assignments of each module and provide you with detailed written feedback and support.

There are many Do’s and Don’ts in publishing that writers tend to learn the hard way, after years of rejection. What if you could skip all that and cut straight to the good stuff? This course will teach you how to properly format your short stories, research publications that are actively looking for your type of writing and stand out from the crowd!

Outline of our Online Path to Publication Course

Week One: Formatting

For the first week, you will learn how to properly format your short stories.

This is a crucial technical step, which is often overlooked but is necessary for the success of a story.


Week Two: Standing out From the Crowd

How do you highlight your writing credentials in just three sentences? This week, you’ll find out how!

We will focus on creating cover letters and concise author bios that help you stand out in the hectic crowd of publishing.


Week Three: Research

Module three will look at researching and seeking out publications that are actively looking for work just like your own!

Your experienced tutor will highlight the best places to look. They will also give you the best insight into catching the eye of the preliminary readers who can pass your work up the editorial chain.


Week Four: Taking the Plunge

For week four of the online path to publication course, you will take the leap!

You will submit your properly formatted short story and author bio to a literary journal that you will have found. Your tutor will also send you a hand-picked list of journals and publications for you to choose from.


Week Five: What Happens Post-Submission?

Our final module will focus on your post-submission skills.

What should you do while waiting to hear back? You will learn some tips and tricks for handling rejection and discover what you should look for in an accepted story’s contract. This week will help you to prepare for the next steps in your writing journey.

About The Tutor

Tyler Paterson is a three-time Pushcart Prize nominee, holds an MFA in Fiction Writing from the University of New Hampshire, and is a graduate of Second City Chicago. His work has appeared in over 90 publications worldwide including The Saturday Evening Post, The Forge Literary Magazine, The Dalhousie Review, Brilliant Flash Fiction, and Fresh Ink. A semi-finalist in the Aura Estra short story contest, his work has also received notable accolades from Lycan Valley, North 2 South Press, and Lumberloft.
