The HG Wells Short Story Competition is open for entries.

Submission Guidelines

  • Theme: The Cheat.
  • Entries must be in English.
  • The length must be 1,500 to 5,000 words.
  • Open style/genre.
  • Open to entries from across the world.

Entry fee: 

  • Aged over 21 on 7th July 2026: £10 per entry (£5 for students accompanied by a copy of their student ID)
  • Under 21 on 7th July 2026: no entry fee

Prizes: The annual HG Wells Fiction Short Story Competition offers a £500 Senior and £1,000 Junior prize and free publication of all shortlisted entries in a quality, professionally published paperback anthology.

Deadline: Tuesday 7th July at 11 pm BST.
