Her third novel, The Hotel Witch will be released in February 2023. She has taught creative writing for adults and children in Brisbane, Berlin, and London.

Course Overview:

Our online short story writing course features six engaging modules, each focused on a unique aspect of storytelling. We recommend dedicating 2-3 hours per week to the course, allowing you to work through the text lessons at your own pace, as there are no set class times. Your tutor will email the first module to you on the course start date, and you can expect a new module to be released weekly in the form of text lessons (keep an eye on your SPAM folder to ensure you don’t miss it).

To ensure your progress, you will be assigned a dedicated online tutor to assess your weekly written assignments and provide personalized feedback.

As an added benefit, once the class ends, you’ll still have access to the course materials to refresh your memory or revisit specific topics.

Lesson One: Short Story Essentials

This first lesson shows you how to start a short story, regardless of genre. It teaches  core techniques concerning themes, balances narratives, and writing poetically.

Lesson Two: Short Story Characters

This module shows you how to write any character in a story through effective personification and other narrative techniques such as juxtaposition.

Lesson Three: Short Story Villains

This lesson builds on the previous one, showing you all of the antagonists you could include in a short story. It also teaches you how to write a self-conscious narrative with villains that will intrigue your reader.

Lesson Four: Short Story Settings

The fourth lesson shows you how to write about a place in a short story through photographic narratives and vivid metaphors that will impact your readers.

Lesson Five: Plot in a Short Story

This module walks you through creating a plot for a short story. It teaches you how to create non-traditional stories through contemporary techniques like flash fiction.

Lesson Six: Mistakes to Avoid in a Short Story

The final lesson walks you through the mistakes to avoid in the form, such as thematic balance and common tropes and cliches. It also shows you how to effectively edit your work for publication.
